January 21, 2013, Troy, MI – This year the Concours d’Elegance of America pays tribute to the cars that have participated in The Great Race. The Great Race feature will be one of 22 special classes assembled for the 2013 Concours d’Elegance of America.

Car Selection Committee Member, Vahan Nazarian said, “This is a great opportunity to showcase race cars that have raced in past The Great Races at our Concours.”

The Great Race has a fascinating history. In 1983 Tom McRae and Norman Miller purchased a failing race promoter who had planned to race Pre-World War II automobiles across the United States for a massive purse.

In that inaugural race, 69 antique auto enthusiasts paid $5,000 each to participate and compete for the $250,000 prize. The race started at Knott’s Berry Farm, near Los Angeles, CA. The final destination was Indianapolis. Of the 62 finalists, 16 racers participated in the Indy Festival Parade the following day.

Throughout the years the routes have been changed to provide interest and the focus became more family-oriented.

Since Pre-War cars were not built to travel our modern interstates, care was taken to plan routes to accommodate the participants while providing amazing scenery of our country.

A great camaraderie develops among the participants who come from all backgrounds, cultures and chosen race vehicles. It’s a great equalizer for a fantastic journey.

The 35th Annual Concours d’Elegance of America will be held Sunday, July 28, 2013 at The Inn at St. John’s in Plymouth, MI from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. General admission and VIP tickets are now on sale at our website or call the Concours office at (248) 643-8645.
